There’s something of Richard Linklater’s BEFORE trilogy in the DNA of A REAL PAIN, with some recognizable inheritance from Michael Winterbottom’s TRIP series also apparent. The perambulatory pacing, the languorous cinematography that asks you to look below the surface of touristy sights, the dialogue that meanders through an unpretentious and unstructured unpacking of the meaning of life, the total absence of any "bad guys," the near total absence of any outright conflict, the barest hint of any goal guiding the plot aside from the completion of a simple itinerary… A Real Pain shares all these realistic features with those earlier, more spirited, life-affirming films. Yet somehow… it doesn’t quite work.I never really got into this movie. Everyone besides the cousins ​​ played by Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin) I think a large part of it has to do with all the supporting characters (i.e. Will Sharpe’s non-Jewish tour guide, the Rwandan convert, the old couple, the sexy divorcee… the characters are all very basic, very conventional, very boring. Culkin is wonderful–a glimpse perhaps of his Succession character if Roman Roy actually cared about people–but I think that’s just a credit to Culkin’s talent; he somehow manages to transcend what he’s been given to work with.This is a decent indie film with a few good laughs, a couple of interesting ideas, a memorable tour of Poland, and a solid performance from Culkin.

40/33 — following this year’s lineup of romantic holiday-themed movies that you can watch from the comfort of your own home Chronology Alana Higman, a die-hard Kansas City Chiefs fan, and her family are competing to win the team’s Fan of the Year award, in a process judged by Director of Fan Engagement Derrick. The movie was filmed in the historic Independence Square in Independence, Missouri, which actually looks like it did that year. The locations that served as the Higman family store and Norma and Nick’s BBQ restaurant are also family-owned businesses in real life. I’m also not much of a Chiefs fan The Square also puts up Christmas lights, just like in the movie. There was a bit too much hype for this movie, including a “live” update during every commercial break in the movie that preceded it. To me, they’re the current evil empire of the NFL. I enjoyed this movie (They actually have some very honest players, and I use the word evil as an exaggeration.) But once again, I’m facing my obsession with watching every Christmas movie premiere on at least 5 channels. It was quite different from the usual, and there may have been snow, but no snowballs or many of the other items on the Christmas movie checklist. Tyler Hynes and Hunter King have very good chemistry, almost what I sometimes call sizzle. I thought the acting was a bit mixed The story first caught my attention with the effort to win the fan contest, and then I watched the outcome of the obstacle course at the end. Hynes was his usual steady yet carefree self. King’s character had appealing qualities, but also a certain neurosis, especially in his complete obsession with superstition. That being said, I had mixed feelings about the ending, especially after the story had built up (I realize these feelings are a bit conflicted.) As I said, I’m not a Chiefs fan, so I didn’t recognize many of the cameos, but there seemed to be a few.
