44/42 KJ and Dan struggle to connect. Years after a strained relationship, the couple head to a friend’s cabin for the weekend to rekindle their romance… only to find a dying, but not quite dead, mouse stuck in a glue trap. They disagree on what to do, with KJ advocating for a quick death, while Dan suggests making the mouse’s last moments as pleasant as possible. The pair compromise and move on, slowly coming back to each other in this idyllic setting. Unfortunately, their peace is shattered by the arrival of a petite woman who can be charitably described as “eccentric” – she’s their landlord’s younger sister, and had no idea anyone was staying at the family cabin. No problem if she crashes, right? Filming lasted a total of 34 days between March 16 and May 5, 2023. It was shot in Budapest, Hungary and in Carrara, Italy. I can’t praise Brady Corbet and his vision enough here The Brutalist: The Brutalist is a painting come to life on the screen. It’s as if Vincent Van Gogh created this absolute directorial masterpiece. From the subtle yet extremely effective and powerful sound design and score. Not to mention the stunning cinematography where every frame comes to life before your eyes. Such a profound and powerful story That it’s an original script is truly a testament to how the film industry should be run. The Brutalist is a grounded story that takes you emotionally to places I didn’t want to go. I’m glad this film is 3 hours and 35 minutes long because it deserves to take its time telling the story. And that’s three and a half hours of pure cinematic experience. That’s how you make a film I sat there in awe during every scene. Adrien Brody teaches a masterclass in acting. It’s all there for you to witness: the crying, screaming scenes, the subtle moments and gestures, the looks in his eyes. So much variety in one film that I don’t think I’ve seen a performance of this level in a long time. Guy Pearce is absolutely stunning, at times terrifying Felicity Jones comes into the story later than I would have imagined but she can totally hold her head high, she’s a true beauty to watch. In short, The Brutalist is a three and a half hour spectacle that deserves its place in the world of cinema and then some. I didn’t expect to like “Maria,” but I did. I enjoyed most of the film (especially the scenes involving J. F. Just a little I enjoyed hearing the real Maria Callas sing well-known arias (although, to be honest, I’m not much of an opera fan). I thought Angelina Jolie was great as the wounded, damaged diva who, despite her bitterness towards the people who love and serve her, somehow miraculously gained my empathy. I found the limited ‘lip-syncing’ from Callas’ singing to be a great choice. We know Jolie can’t sing, and the film didn’t try to trick us into thinking she could. And finally, the device of never really knowing what’s ‘real’ as opposed to Maria’s hallucination allowed the film to delve into the diva’s past without long stretches of explanatory dialogue. The film drags a little. Did I love “Maria”? But overall, the scenes are well-timed, so if one feels too slow, we’re quickly rewarded with one that interests us. No. Is it for “everyone”? Again, no.
