Remake of El Agenta Topo (2020)
Charles, a retiree, finds a new life when he answers an ad for a private detective and becomes a mole in a secret investigation of a nursing home. Based on the Chilean documentary “El Agente Topo”. Ted Danson (around 76 years old) plays Charles (around 76 years old), a retired engineering professor living in San Francisco. He is also a producer of this series, which stands out from others by avoiding the all too common vulgar dialogues.
As a result, it is very clean and more enjoyable
In this story, his wife died maybe a year ago from Alzheimer’s disease. He is healthy, but maybe bored with his daily routine. He has a habit of reading magazines and newspapers and often cuts out interesting ones to send to his married daughter in Sacramento. One day, through a cutout hole, he notices a small, short ad.
Charles is the key
We are looking for someone aged 75-85 for a specific job. This leads him to a private investigator hired by a man whose mother is in some fancy retirement home in San Francisco, important jewelry has been stolen, and his son wants to catch the thief. He is then hired to check in, observe, and report as the person who is required to report on what is happening. Ted Danson is simply perfect in this role, which he plays with a great deal of humor.
The ending suggests a sequel, I hope so
It quickly becomes less about who the thief was and more about the relationships. The cast of characters is played by a group of excellent actors, many of whom are favorites we have come to know over the past 50 years. My wife and I had a great time streaming it. After watching the first three episodes in one night, we watched the last five in one sitting after our usual Saturday night dinner of steak and wine.
